Miller
Joins SVSU Coaching Staff
UNIVERSITY CENTER,
Mich. - Saginaw Valley State track and field head coach Jim Nesbitt
has announced the hiring of assistant coach Melissa Miller for the
2005-06 school year effective immediately.
"Melissa will be a welcome addition
to the program," said Nesbitt. "She is a hard worker and
brings experience being a student-athlete at Central Michigan."

Four Men Compete at Nationals
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Senior
Jake Adams (Corunna, Mich.) started out
the men's portion on Thursday with a 12th-place finish in the discus
with a best toss of 164-2. Senior Pedro Ortega
(Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) qualified for the finals in
the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:26.61 (8th place) and
on Saturday finished 12th in the finals with a time of 9:54.14.
Freshman Eltaro Hooper (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln)
competed in two events at nationals and finished 13th in the triple
jump (47-7.25) and failed to place in the high jump registering
no height in three jumps. Junior Adam Roach (Port
Huron, Mich.) placed 15th in the 5000 meter preliminaries with
a time of 15:07.63 and failed to qualify for the finals.

FOUR CARDINALS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The
men will be lead by freshman Eltaro Hooper (Ypsilanti,
Mich./Lincoln HS) who will be competing in two events, the
high jump and the triple jump. He qualified 12th in the high jump
with a mark of 6'-11'' and 18th in the triple jump leaping 47'-10.5''.

GUERRERO
NAMED MVP IN FIELD EVENTS AT GLIAC'S
ALLENDALE, Mich. - The SVSU Cardinals
finished third at the 2005 GLIAC Outdoor Championships with 116
points and senior Mario Guerrero (Saginaw,
Mich./Swan Valley) was named Male MVP in Field Events. Guerrero
placed in the top four in three field events and won the high jump
(6-7.5) and long jump (23-4.5) while finishing fourth in the triple
jump (46-4.75). Guerrero earned 25 team points which was 22 percent
of his team's total. (More) |

GUERRERO
AND GALLIER SHINE AT "GINA" RELAYS
HILLSDALE, Mich.
- Senior Mario Guerrero (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley)
and senior Mandie Gallier (Medford, N.J./Shawnee)
each had big meets at the "Gina" Relays on Friday and
Saturday. Guerrero participated in the decathlon for the first time
and managed to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with 6,561
points. He has the 11th-best point total among Division II athletes
and won the event by more than four hundred points. Gallier finished
in the top 10 in three events including a first place finish in
the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.11. In addition, she was sixth
in the 400 dash (57.82) and ninth in the 100 hurdles (14.87). (More) |

Hooper
and Baranek Shine at Ferris State Invite
BIG RAPIDS, Mich.
- Freshman Eltaro Hooper (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln)
set two personal bests on Saturday at the Ferris State Invite in
Big Rapids. Hooper high jumped 6' 11" which is a provisional
qualifying mark and then won the triple jump (46-4.75) by a foot.
Junior Chris Baranek
(Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) won two sprint events
with a time of 11.12 in the 100 dash and 22.29 in the 200 dash.

Win Edmonds Invitational
RENSSELAER, Ind.. - SVSU began the
outdoor track season at the Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational on
Saturday hosted by St. Joseph's College. The Cardinal men won the
invitational with 200 team points, better than 31.50 team points
by the second place Pumas of St. Joseph's. Sophomore Greg
Schmit (Leslie, Mich.) won the grueling 5000 meters by
a mere four seconds (15:57.27) over Anthony Kariuki of Marian College.

Hooper
Earns All-American Honors
BOSTON, Mass. - Senior Mary
Jo Pouillon (Owosso, Mich.) and freshman Eltaro
Hooper (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) both earned
All-American honors based on their performances at the 2005 NCAA
Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. On Friday, Hooper
placed seventh in the high jump (6' 9.5") and earned 1.5 team
points for the Cards. On Saturday, Pouillon also placed seventh
in the shot put (45' 6.5") earning two team points. (More) |

Heading to National Championships
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - SVSU
coach Jim Nesbitt is pleased to announce that five athletes will
be competing at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships on March
11 & 12 in Boston, Mass. Chris Baranek (Kawkawlin,
Mich./Bay City Western), Adam Roach (Port
Huron, Mich.), Mario Guerrero (Saginaw,
Mich./Swan Valley) and Eltaro Hooper (Ypsilanti,
Mich./Lincoln) qualified for the men. Mary Jo Pouillon
(Owosso, Mich.) qualified for the women. (More)

Finish Third at GLIAC Indoor Meet
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw
Valley State men's track and field squad finished third at the 2005
GLIAC Indoor Championship with a team score of 82.5 points. Grand
Valley State won the title with 192 points. Senior Mario
Guerrero (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) won the
high jump and tied a meet record with a height of 6' 11". Guerrero
also placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 22' 8.5".
