CARDINAL
MEN WIN EDMONDS INVITATIONAL
RENSSELAER, Ind.. - SVSU began the outdoor track
season at the Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational on Saturday hosted
by St. Joseph's College. The Cardinal men won the invitational with
200 team points, better than 31.50 team points by the second place
Pumas of St. Joseph's. The women's team placed fourth out of five
teams and scored 119 team points. Freshman Kali Briggs
(Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) won two events including the high
jump (5' 0") and the javelin throw (118' 2") for the ladies.
Senior Ashley Bishop (Pickford, Mich.) won the
discus throw (143' 6") and also set a new meet record in the
process. Bishop also placed second in the shot put with a distance
of 42' 5.25". Freshman Becca Rudey (Wixom,
Mich./Walled Lake Central) won the 3000 meters besting Jessica Kalafut
of Northern Michigan by 10 seconds with a time of 11:05.75.
There were several top performances
on the men's side for the Cardinals, including a first place finish
for Pete O'Brien (Davison, Mich./Flint Kearsley)
in the 400 meters (52.49). Sophomore Greg Schmit
(Leslie, Mich.) won the grueling 5000 meters by a mere four seconds
(15:57.27) over Anthony Kariuki of Marian College. SVSU finished
first and second in the steeplechase as Pedro Ortega
(Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) and Jerome Recker
(Port Huron, Mich.) earned 18 team points combined. Ortega ran a
9:58.35 with Recker coming across at 10:08.09. The 4x100 and 4x400
meter relays both won as the 4x100 set a new meet record in a time
of 42.85. Senior Mario Guerrero (Saginaw, Mich./Swan
Valley) bested the field in the high jump (6' 5") and the long
jump (22' 6.25").
