Two Second-Half Goals Lead to 2-1 Loss versus Gannon

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – It might start to sound like a broken record, but once again on Sunday the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second half only to watch Gannon score twice in the final 29:40 for a 2-1 victory. Senior Jared Riepma (Midland, Mich.) scored at the 48:33 on an assist from Eric Whelton (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) to give the Cards a 1-0 lead. Brian Yanful tied things up at 1-1 at 61:10 and the game-winner was scored at 86:19 off the foot of Adam Maduri. SVSU led most of the statistical categories including a 21-10 advantage in shots. Ashland Scores Two Goals in Last 10 Minutes in 2-1 Win over SVSU

ASHLAND, Ohio – The SVSU men's soccer team let a golden opportunity slip through their hands on Sunday as they took a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes to play, only for Ashland to tie the score just four minutes later and score the game-winning goal with 1:49 left on the clock. Senior Cale Wassermann (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) scored at 79:11 from ten yards out with an assist from Jared Riepma to stake SVSU to a 1-0 lead. Elliot Bradbrook answered with his sixth goal of the season to tie the match and Danny Slater's second goal of the year at 88:11 on a breakaway proved to be the heartbreaker. Sophomore Eric Carnes (Portage, Mich./Northern) made eight saves as Ashland registered eleven shots on goal compared to three for the Cards. (Stats)

Cards Drop 3-1 Match at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – Junior Matt Urick (Novi, Mich.) scored the lone goal for the Cardinals in a 3-1 loss at Findlay on Saturday. He tied the match up at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at 33:30. The Oilers took a 2-1 lead into halftime as Carlos Bonilla scored the game-winner at 37:07. SVSU outshot Findlay, 11-10, as both teams had six shots on goal. The Cards are now 2-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC. (Stats)

Urick Kicks Game Winner in 1-0 Win at Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – Junior Matt Urick (Novi, Mich.) picked a very good time for his first goal of the season on Sunday in a 1-0 win at Mercyhurst. He took a pass from senior Cale Wassermann (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and scored at 9:48 in the first half as SVSU improved to 2-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC. Urick had three shots and two shots on goal and Wassermann added three shots and one shot on goal. Mercyhurst outshot SVSU, 23-14, but six shots were all the Lakers could put on net. SVSU spoiled a last minute rally by Mercyhurst as Eric Carnes (Portage, Mich./Northern) made two of his six saves.

Cards Give Up Three Second-Half Goals in 4-1 Loss at Gannon

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s soccer team was in the match in the first half, but Gannon scored three times in the second half to earn the win.
Gannon’s Dan Howell scored first at 8:09 to put his team up 1-0, but Ryan Norman (Linden, Mich.) scored at 18:49 to tie things up at one apiece before halftime. The game remained tied until Gannon’s Gareth Kolkenbeck scored at 63:49 to give them a lead that they would never relinquish. Three minutes later, Adam Maduri scored to give Gannon a 3-1 advantage, which two minutes later turned into a 4-1 lead in part to Jonathon Brickman’s goal.
The Cards move to 1-5-1 on the season with the loss, while Gannon moves to 5-1-1. SVSU returns to action tomorrow as they travel to Mercyhurst. The match is set to start at noon.

Cards Pick Up First Win in 6-2 Victory over Olivet

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Saginaw Valley State responded with six second-half goals en route to a 6-2 win over Olivet in their home opener on Wednesday. Senior Jared Riepma (Midland, Mich.) scored two goals and assisted on the game-winning goal earning five points on the night. He now has three goals this season for SVSU. Also adding to the final tally was senior Cale Wassermann (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) who scored SVSU second goal which gave them a lead for six minutes at the 59:59 mark. Junior Ryan Norman (Linden, Mich.) scored the game-winner at 69:51, his second goal of the year. Eric Whelton (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) and Devon Bobalek (Midland, Mich./Dow) added insurance goals in the final 12:30. (Stats)

Norman's Late Goal Ties Tiffin, 2-2

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State Cardinals went the distance with Tiffin on Thursday and after 110 minutes the teams tied 2-2. Junior Ryan Norman (Linden, Mich.) scored with five minutes remaining in regulation for his first goal of the season with an assist from sophomore Josh Hockin (Swartz Creek, Mich.). SVSU opened the scoring with an unassisted goal from senior Cale Wassermann (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) just three minutes into the match. Tiffin followed with goals by Chad Smith on a penalty kick in the 28th minute and Adi Vlad with an assist by Derek Foley in the 69th minute. Sophomore Eric Carnes (Portage, Mich./Northern) made 12 saves in net for the Cards. SVSU had 12 shots on goal with Tiffin registering 14 shots on goal. (Stats)

Cards Drop Night Game, 3-0, at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The stars were out at Key Stadium on Friday night for the first night game in the school's history and the Greyhounds were pumped apparently as they dropped SVSU to 0-2 on the year with a 3-0 win. Eric Nance scored two goals for Indy and the Cardinals managed just four shots and one shot on goal. Eric Carnes (Portage, Mich./Northern) made seven saves in goal for SVSU. The Cards are next in action on August 31 at Tiffin. (Stats)

Late Goal Hands Cardinals Loss in Season Opener

RENSSELAER, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State men's soccer team played a tough 90 minutes in their season opener and came out on the wrong side of a 2-1 decision at Saint Joseph's College on Thursday. The Cards kicked things off at 7:00 pm and played to a scoreless tie at the half. The Cards defense was stout in the first half limiting the Pumas to three shots. St. Joseph's opened the scoring in the second half at the 57:48 mark on an unassisted goal by Justin Fox. SVSU answered just over eleven minutes later as senior Jared Riepma (Midland, Mich.) got a feed from sophomore Brian Aguilar (Toronto, Ont./Holy Cross Academy) and knotted things up at 1-1. Reshad Etminan executed a penalty kick with 2:13 left in the match for the game-winning goal.
    Senior Cale Wassermann (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) tallied five shots and Riepma added three shots for SVSU. (Stats)

Moody Hired to Guide Men's Program

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University has announced the hiring of Art Moody as assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs. Moody served as the interim head coach for the Cardinal men’s squad during the 2004 season, leading the team to a 6-5-2 overall record and 2-2-1 in the GLIAC. (More)
