Cardinals Win
Battle of the Birds
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University
men's basketball team pulled out an 86-79 victory over St. Mary's
College on Thursday (December 19). The Cardinals held a 45-37 halftime
lead and did not allow the Eagles to get closer than five points
after the break.
The Cardinals placed five players
in double figures in the scoring column, with senior Terrence
Wright (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) leading the way
with a season-high and game-high 22 points on 7-16 shooting from
the field. Sophomores Anthony Parker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona
Shores HS) and David Williams (Laingsburg, Mich.)
chipped in with 20 and 15 points, respectively. Junior Maurice
Brown (Detroit, Mich./Cody HS) pitched in twelve points,
while senior Jerry Minott (Muskegon, Mich./West Michigan
Christian HS) recorded a season-high eleven. Brown also pulled
down a game-high twelve rebounds, giving him his sixth double-double
of the season. He also added a game-high three steals. Parker and
Minott each recorded four assists to lead SVSU.
Maruc Bowman, who recorded team highs
of 22 points and eleven rebounds, led St. Mary's. Also adding to
the Eagles' offensive attack were Jarold Tolbert with 13 points,
Kyle Volker with twelve, and Ryan Meerschaert with eleven. Volker
and Meerschaert each added a game-high five assists.
SVSU head coach Dean Lockwood employed
a balanced attack, as he played nine Cardinals for at least ten
minutes each. SVSU held a 41-36 margin in rebounds, while the Eagles
held a 17-15 advantage in assists. The shooting percentages were
close, with SVSU holding advantages in field goal percentage (48.5%
to 47.1%) and free throw shooting (77.8% to 75.0%), while St. Mary's
outshot the Cardinals from three-point range (40.0% to 35.3%).
The win moves the Cardinals to 7-3
(2-1 GLIAC) on the season, while St. Mary's falls to 2-10. The Cardinals
return to action after Christmas with a road trip to Oakland City
University (Ind.) on December 28. Tipoff is set for 3:00p.m.
