2005 GLIAC Champs!10/11/05 - Men's Golf
SVSU Captures 2005 GLIAC Championship by Five Strokes

ERIE, Pa. – It had been eight years since Saginaw Valley State has hoisted the GLIAC Championship trophy and for head coach Andy Bethune Tuesday was a special day for SVSU golf. "We are very excited right now," said Bethune, who captured his first GLIAC crown. "Our kids played well right down to the wire and made shots when we had to. It was a great team effort and the course was in great condition for us to fire low rounds." The Cardinals captured their 11th GLIAC title overall and first since 1997. SVSU won the tournament with a three-round total of 898 and bested second-place Ferris State by five strokes. Gannon (904) and Grand Valley (905) were right behind the Bulldogs for third and fourth respectively. Gannon's Dave Patronik won medalist honors with a six-under par 210. Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) tied for second with a total of 219 (+3). Joe Beyer (Freeland, Mich.) tied for seventh with a +8 score of 224. Scott Urquhart (Queens Ferry, Scotland) tied for 10th at 227, including a big final round score of 72 (E). Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) tied for 21st at +14 with a 230. Cards Clinging to One Stroke Lead after 36 holes at GLIAC Championship

ERIE, Pa. – The SVSU men's golf squad is 18 holes away from a possible GLIAC title which would be their first since 1997 as they hold a slim one-stroke lead over Ferris State and a four-stroke lead over Grand Valley heading into the final round on Tuesday morning from Lake View Country Club. Sophomore Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and junior Joe Beyer (Freeland, Mich.) are pacing the Cardinals after a two-round score of 147, good for a fourth-place tie. King fired a two-under par 70 during the morning 18 holes. Sophomore Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) is tied for 12th with a total of 151. Cards Win Bay Valley Intercollegiate by Two Strokes

BAY CITY, Mich. – Junior Adam Miller (Gaylord, Mich.) tied for medalist honors at the Bay Valley Intercollegiate on Saturday with a 18-hole total of 68 (-3). The Cardinals also won the tournament by two strokes over Grand Valley State with a score of 287. Scott Urquhart fired a one-under par 70 and finished tied for third. SVSU Claims Fourth at Northwood Invite

MIDLAND, Mich. – Junior Joe Beyer (Freeland, Mich.) had his best finish of the fall firing a 147 (76-71) and claiming a tie for fifth at the Northwood Invite held at Currie Golf Course. The 36-hole affair was a par 70 in the morning and a par 72 in the afternoon. Beyer fired a one-under par score during the final 18 holes. Junior Adam Miller (Gaylord, Mich.) tied for 16th with a total of 153. Sophomore Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) tied for 20th with a total of 154. Miller Named GLIAC Golfer of the Week

BAY CITY, Mich. – Junior Adam Miller (Gaylord, Mich.) tied for medalist honors at the NCAA Regional Qualifier held in South Haven with a total of 140 (-4). He helped lead the squad to a first-place finish with a team score of 581 (+5) which was the team's third top five finish this fall. Miller has finished in the top 20 in three tournaments this fall and overall in six rounds is one-over par averaging 73.2 thus far. (More, .pdf)

SVSU Wins Regional Qualifier by Six Strokes

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State men's golf team trailed by four strokes heading into the final round of the NCAA Regional Qualifier at Hawks Head Golf Course in South Haven, Michigan and posted a 288 for a six-stroke win over Northern Kentucky (587). SVSU finished with a team score of 581 (+5) on the par 72 course that measured 6,984 yards. Junior Adam Miller (Gaylord, Mich.) was remarkable as he tied for medalist honors with a four-under par total of 140, including a 69 on Monday. Junior Scott Urquhart (Queens Ferry, Scotland) also finished in the top 10 with a seventh-place score of 143 (-1). Sophomore Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) fired a 146 with an even-par 72 on Monday and was tied for 13th. Cards In Position for Title After First Round Score of 293

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. – The Cardinal men's golf squad is four shots out of the lead after one round at the NCAA Regional Qualifier held in South Haven, Michigan with a team score of 293. The Cardinals are tied with Northwood and trail Gannon (290) and Northern Kentucky (289) heading into tomorrow's 18 holes. Junior Adam Miller (Gaylord, Mich.) shot a one-under par 71 and is tied for fifth. Junior Scott Urquhart (Queens Ferry, Scotland) fired an even-par 72 and is tied for 12th. Sophomore Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) is tied for 26th with a round of 74 (+2). Sophomore Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) is tied for 43rd with a round of 76 (+4).

Cards Place Fourth at Grand Valley Fall Invitational

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State golfers battled a tough course and even tougher windy conditions on Monday in the GVSU Fall Invitational held at The Meadows Golf Course. In the 36-hole, one-day event the conditions got worse as the day wore on and the afternoon scores reflected those poor conditions. Through it all, SVSU finished fourth with a team score of 619 (+43) behind champion Findlay (595), Grand Valley (603) and Northwood (613). Sophomore Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) braved the elements and playing as an individual shot a 148 (+4) which tied for third. His scorecard included a morning round of two-under par 70, which tied for the tournament's best round. Junior Adam Miller (Gaylord, Mich.) paced SVSU on the team side with a total of 153, which tied for 19th overall. Junior Joe Beyer (Freeland, Mich.) carded a 154 and finished tied for 22nd. Junior Scott Urquhart (Queens Ferry, Scotland) scored the same as Beyer with a 75 and 79 for a tied for 22nd. (Results)

Cards Place Third at Bulldog Fall Invitational

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State fired two solid rounds of 298 and 297 at the Ferris State Bulldog Fall Invitational and finished 19-over par good for third place behind Ferris State (+5) and Grand Valley State (+10). Junior Adam Miller (Gaylord, Mich.) brought home a top 10 finish firing a two-over par 146 and placing eighth. Senior Adam Haswell (Freeland, Mich.) tied for 16th overall with a five-over par 149, including a 75 on Sunday. Junior Joe Beyer (Freeland, Mich.) tied for 24th with a two-day total of 151. Junior Scott Urquhart (Queens Ferry, Scotland) finished 37th with a 153. Freshman Sean Patrick (Vancouver, B.C.) tied for 42nd with a score of 154. (Results)

MILLER AND RUTHERFORD NAMED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-GLIAC

BAY CITY, Mich. – Sophomore Adam Miller (Gaylord, Mich.) and freshman Sean Rutherford (Haslett, Mich.) have been named Honorable Mention All-GLIAC for the 2004-05 school year in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. (More)

CARDS WIN MOTOR CITY INVITATIONAL

CANTON, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley men's golf team captured the title at the Motor City Invitational hosted by Wayne State on Saturday with a total of 306. The event held at Pheasant Run Golf Course was shortened to a one-day tournament due to inclement weather as the Cards beat the host school by two strokes. (Recap)

Cards Stumble to 16th at Great Lakes Regional #3

AUBURN, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State men's golf squad would like to forget about the Great Lakes Regional Qualifier #3 held at Deer Track Golf Course. Saginaw Valley finished 16th out of 18 schools at the event with a two-round team total of 611. (Recap)

CARDS FINISH SECOND AT RIVERMAN INVITATIONAL

O'FALLON, Mo. – The Saginaw Valley State men's golf squad rallied to a second-place finish on day two of the Riverman Invitational hosted by the University of Missouri-St. Louis carding a low-round of 292 and finishing five strokes behind Grand Valley State. The Cardinals fired a 301 in the first round on Sunday and found themselves tied for fourth. The Cards were six strokes better than Wisconsin-Parkside and had the lowest round by two strokes on Monday. (Recap)

KING HELPS LEAD SVSU TO 3rd PLACE FINISH

PERRY PARK, Ky. – Freshman Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) led SVSU with a +1 score of 145 for the two-day NCAA Regional Qualifier held at Perry Park Golf Course and helped the Cardinals to a third-place finish with a team score of 596. The Cardinals were 16 strokes behind champion Grand Valley State and seven strokes behind second-place Lewis University. (Recap)

Cardinals Take Fifth at Florida Tech Invite

PALM BAY, Fla. – The SVSU golf team concluded two days of competition at the Florida Tech Spring Invitational with a fifth place showing. Johnson & Wales took home team honors with a total score of 913, while the Cardinals posted a 935 for the tournament. Adam Haswell (Freeland, Mich.) had the Cardinals' highest individual showing, finishing in fifth place with a three-round score of 228. Haswell shot a 74 on day one and followed up with an 80 and a 74 on day two. (Recap)
