Twelve
Student-Athletes to Join SVSU in 2005-06
UNIVERSITY CENTER,
Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University head baseball coach
Walt Head has announced the signing of twelve student-athletes to
join the SVSU baseball team for the 2005-06 school year.
“We are very excited about this year’s
incoming class,” said Head. “We have a great mix of
players and look forward to great competition for starting spots.”

PLAYERS HONORED BY GLIAC
BAY CITY, Mich.
– The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)
has announced their All-GLIAC teams for the 2005 season and six
Cardinals have been selected as representatives. Four players have
earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors and two players have earned
Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors for their prowess on the diamond.

BOW OUT OF GLIAC TOURNEY
DETROIT, Mich. -
The Saginaw Valley State
baseball team was eliminated from the GLIAC Tournament on Friday,
May 13 when they dropped their game against Wayne State Warriors
by a score of 7-3. Saginaw Valley scored one run in the bottom of
the second inning and didn't score again until the bottom of eighth
when they recorded two more runs. By that time Wayne State already
had done enough damage by tallying seven runs, enough to give them
a 7-3 victory.The Cards were lead by Burghardt, who had two hits
and a run scored. Fanion, Crawford and Justin Doughty
(Oscoda, Mich) all recorded a hit and an RBI to help the
cause. Roy suffered the loss on the mound, going seven innings and
surrendering seven earned runs on eleven hits, while striking out

DROP OPENER OF GLIAC TOURNEY
DETROIT, Mich. -
The Saginaw Valley State
baseball team had a eight run lead after four innings of play only
to see the game slip away, eventually dropping the game by a score
of 11-12 in 11 innings. Leading the Cardinals at the plate were
senior Dan Jones and Mike Crawford, who both recorded two hits and
two RBI. Jason Burghardt also had a good day, scoring two runs and
getting an RBI to help the cause. Scott Schlaff
(Warren, Mich./Mott CC), who pitched the final two innings of the
game suffered the loss for the Cardinals.

AT WAYNE STATE
DETROIT, Mich. -
The Saginaw Valley State Cardinals earned a split at league-leading
Wayne State on Wednesday winning
game one 9-6 and dropping the nightcap 3-0. Senior outfielder Mike
Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) collected four RBI
in game one including a towering three-run homer to left center
which gave SVSU a 4-1 lead. Crawford later was hit by a pitch with
the bases loaded to plate another run. Junior Jim Kelly
(Lake Orion, Mich.) pitched six strong innings and struck
out seven improving to 3-1. Freshman Brandon Fanion
(Marysville, Mich.) had two of the Cardinals five hits
in game two as Wayne State scored two earned runs in the fourth

THROWS SHUTOUT IN GAME TWO AS SVSU SPLITS AT FINDLAY
FINDLAY, Ohio –
Sophomore Scott Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott) was
working on three days rest, but it didn't show on Sunday as SVSU
split a doubleheader at Findlay with Schlaff pitching a complete
game shutout in a 7-0 game two win. Schlaff allowed six hits and
struck out five improving to 5-2 on the year. SVSU dropped a 5-0
decision in game one behind Caleb Meyer who also allowed six hits
and struck out four Cardinals improving to 3-3 on the year. (Recap) |

“7’s” PROPEL SVSU TO SWEEP OF FINDLAY
FINDLAY, Ohio –
The Saginaw Valley State baseball team moved into second place in
the GLIAC on Saturday as they defeated Findlay 7-6 and 7-3 in a
doubleheader at Swale Park. The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead
in the first game including a three-run fourth inning. The big play
in the inning was a three-run homer by freshman Brandon
Fanion (Marysville, Mich.) his third round-tripper of the

SPLIT WITH NORTHWOOD AS FANION HITS WALK-OFF HOMER IN GAME ONE
UNIVERSITY CENTER,
Mich. – Saginaw Valley State had one comeback in extra innings
in game one and had one rally fall short in game two as they split
with Northwood on Wednesday. SVSU got a walk-off homer from freshman
Brandon Fanion (Marysville, Mich.) with
two outs and a full count in the bottom of the 10th inning in a
7-6 game one win and then scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh
and had bases loaded with one out before hitting into a game-ending
double play to lose 6-4. Senior Dan Jones (Gladstone,
Mich.) hit two homers in game one including the game-tying
blast in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. (Recap) |

SECOND INNING PROPELS SVSU TO 20-6 WIN OVER CALVIN
UNIVERSITY CENTER,
Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State baseball team scored more than
20 runs for the second time this season and erupted for 11 runs
in the second inning for a 20-6 win against Calvin College on Tuesday
from the SVSU Baseball Field. Senior outfielder Joe Funsch
(Clio, Mich.) had a monster day collecting his first career
grand slam in the second inning and driving in a career-high seven
runs. Funsch had a two-run single the first time up in the second
inning and later in the inning blasted his first home run over the
wall in right center giving him six RBI in the inning. (Recap) |

HURLS SHUTOUT IN GAME TWO AS SVSU SWEEPS MERCYHURST
ERIE, Pa. - Junior
Steve Liebrecht (Saginaw Heritage HS)
blanked Mercyhurst over seven innings in a 2-0 win in game two on
Sunday as SVSU also won 8-7 in game one taking three out of four
contests over the weekend against the Lakers. Liebrecht allowed
four hits and improved to 3-3 as he also fanned four hitters and

Saginaw Valley State baseball team has had a flair for the dramatic
this season and Saturday was no exception. In a twinbill at Mercyhurst,
SVSU dropped a 14-inning, 3-2 decision to the Lakers in game one
and then behind the arm of freshman Scott Roy (Mt.

THROWS GEM IN GAME TWO AS CARDINALS SPLIT WITH RIVAL NORTHWOOD
MIDLAND, Mich. –
Junior Jim Kelly (Lake Orion, Mich.) got
the nod for his first start of the season after five apperances
in relief this season in game two of a doubleheader with Northwood
on Wednesday and delivered a clutch performance in a 3-1 win. Kelly
rallied the troops after a 5-2 game one defeat and kept the Timberwolves
guessing at the plate. He pitched a complete game and allowed two
hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out three T-Wolves improving
