SCHLAFF THROWS SHUTOUT
IN GAME TWO AS SVSU SPLITS AT FINDLAY
FINDLAY, Ohio – Sophomore
Scott Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott) was working
on three days rest, but it didn't show on Sunday as SVSU split
a doubleheader at Findlay with Schlaff pitching a complete game
shutout in a 7-0 game two win. Schlaff allowed six hits and struck
out five improving to 5-2 on the year. SVSU dropped a 5-0 decision
in game one behind Caleb Meyer who also allowed six hits and struck
out four Cardinals improving to 3-3 on the year.
The Oilers took one out of four
on the weekend and they did so by jumping out to a 3-0 lead in
game one after the first inning. Starter Elijah Martin
(Imlay City, Mich.) gave up just one earned run in the first and
later gave up earned runs in the third and fifth innings. He threw
4.1 innings and allowed six hits and struck out four falling to
3-3. Ken Hoffman (Midland, Mich.) went 2-for-3
in game one as the only SVSU player with two hits.
The offense gave Schlaff plenty
of support with four runs in the top of the first in game two.
Saginaw Valley would add three more runs in the top of the seventh
to make the cushion very comfortable for Schlaff. The first four
batters in the inning singled as Brandon Fanion
(Marysville, Mich.) drove in two on a single to right to make
it 2-0. Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic
Central) added an RBI single and a Justin Hanning
(Lake Orion, Mich.) RBI groundout made it 4-0. Derek Tracy
(Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) hit a three-run homer, his first
of the year, in the seventh inning to give SVSU the 7-0 win. Fanion
was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Norton was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
