SVSU SCORES 24 RUNS IN
A SWEEP OF FINDLAY
FINDLAY, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State baseball
team had one of its finest offensive showings of the season on
Sunday in a sweep of Findlay. The team broke out the bats with
18 hits in a 16-5 game one win. Senior Mike Crawford
(Lake Orion, Mich.) went 3-for-4 with four runs, a double and
a homer. Senior Adam Piggott (Sarnia, Ont.) also
homered and drove in two runs going 2-for-4. Junior Jon
Straus (Beal City, Mich.) entered the game in the fifth
inning and smacked a pinch-hit homer finishing with two RBI's.
Freshman Chris Hanna (Caledonia, Mich.) hit his
first home run and scored three times. Freshman Scott
Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott) threw a complete-game improving
to 5-1. He allowed three earned runs and struck out nine Oilers.
The Cardinals won the second game by building
a 6-0 lead after four innings and holding on for an 8-5 win. SVSU
left 13 runners on base and collected 12 hits off Findlay. Piggott
went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Junior Joe
Funsch (Clio, Mich.) went 2-for-2 with a walk, double
and RBI. Junior Justin Hanning (Lake Orion, Mich.)
and sophomore Jason Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford)
each tallied two RBI's as Burghardt went 3-for-5. Steve
Liebrecht (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) improved to 4-2 with
4.1 solid innings. Liebrecht allowed two earned runs and walked
four. Freshman Jeff Schulz (Detroit, Mich./Catholic
Central) threw the final 2.2 innings and gave up three earned
runs with two strikeouts.
Saginaw Valley (23-18, 15-9 GLIAC) has
won eight of their last 10 in the GLIAC and took three of four
games from Findlay this weekend. SVSU will travel to Central Michigan
on Tuesday, April 20 for a nine-inning affair at 3:00 pm.
