Split Doubleheader With Salem International
FT.MYERS, Fla. –The Saginaw Valley
State University baseball team lost the first game of a doubleheader
with Salem International on Sunday, February 29, by a score of 7-4.
Salem jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in
the bottom of the first inning, and the score didn’t change
until the fifth inning, when the Cards rallied to score four runs,
to take a 4-2 lead. However, Salem was not done, as they would retake
the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as they scored five runs to
seal the victory.
SVSU was led by junior Joe
Funsch (Clio, Mich.) who knocked in two runs,
and shortstop Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic
Central HS) who scored a run and knocked in the Cards other
two runs. Jesse Thompson (Muskegon, Mich./Reeths
Puffer HS) took the loss on the mound for the Cards, as he
went four innings, allowing five runs, although only surrendering
five hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader,
Saginaw Valley got the bats going, as they scored 24 runs, in a
24-8 victory over Salem International.
Seniors Adam Piggot (Sarnia,
Ont./Sarnia Collegiate) and Kurt Neveau (Bay
City, Mich./Central HS) led the offensive attack, as they both
went 3-of-4, with six RBI in the game. One of Neveau’s three
hits was a homerun. Funsch had another strong performance for SVSU,
as he scored four runs, and knocked in another four. Scott
Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott HS) got the easy win
on the hill, as he pitched five innings, while allowing seven runs
on ten hits.
SVSU returns to action on Monday, Mar. 1,
at 9:00am, as they play Kentucky Wesleyan University.
