CARDS SPLIT TWINBILL AT
NORTHWOOD
MIDLAND,
Mich. – The bottom three in the lineup made their presence
known in game one on Wednesday as SVSU defeated Northwood, 14-6,
behind 19 hits. Senior Kurt Neveau (Bay City,
Mich./Central) from the ninth spot went 4-for-4 with four runs
and three RBI's. Neveau also hit his fifth home run in a three-run
second inning for the Cardinals. Junior Chris Norton
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) from the seventh spot went
2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's. Norton also collected his
10th double. Junior third baseman Justin Hanning
(Lake Orion, Mich.) went 4-for-5 with four runs and an RBI in
the eighth spot. The Cards scored three runs in the fourth and
fifth innings and also hung a five-run sixth inning on the Timberwolves.
Freshman Jim Kelly (Lake Orion, Mich.) improved
to 3-0 yielding four earned runs and 11 hits. Kelly threw six
innings and struck out five batters. Cary Pohlman
(Spring Lake, Mich.) pitched a perfect seventh inning in his first
appearance on the mound.
The Cardinals gave up one big inning in
a 6-2 game two loss. The Timberwolves put together four straight
two-out hits, including a three-run home run by Bryan Watson in
the fourth inning to build a cushion. Scott Schlaff
(Warren, Mich./Mott) allowed six earned runs and falls to 5-2.
He also mowed down six hitters and walked three. Senior Mike
Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) smacked his eighth home
run in the first inning giving SVSU a 2-0 lead. NU scored single
runs in the first and second innings before the four-run fourth.
The Cards had several chances to get back into the game, but left
10 men on base.
The Cardinals (24-20, 16-10 GLIAC) will
conclude GLIAC play this weekend as they open a four-game series
against Ashland beginning on Saturday with a pair of games starting
at 1:00 pm.
