CARDS MAKE IT FOUR STRAIGHT
GLIAC WINS WITH A PAIR OF WINS OVER GANNON
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Cardinals improved
to 9-7 in the GLIAC and 16-16 overall with two wins over Gannon
on Friday from the SVSU Baseball Field. Freshman Jesse
Thompson (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) improved
to 2-5 in an 8-4 game one win over the Golden Knights. Thompson
threw six innings and struck out six in the winning effort. The
Cards drew first blood scoring four runs through three innings
and holding a 4-0 lead. The Knights closed the gap with three
runs in the top of the fourth inning. SVSU responded with two
runs in the fourth and fifth innings and took an 8-3 lead into
the sixth inning. A solo homer by Phil Gnacinski ended the scoring
as senior Pat Woody (Bay City, Mich./All
Saints) recorded the final three outs in the seventh inning
after the first two runners reached base. Junior Chris
Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central)
was 2-for-3 in the eighth spot with two doubles (6,7) and two
RBI's. Freshman Danny Patterson (Grand Rapids,
Mich./Catholic Central) also doubled in a pair and scored
a run. Junior Jon Straus (Beal City, Mich.)
also drove in two runs and doubled in three at-bats.
The Cardinals were 3-2 victors in game
two behind a strong outing by freshman Richard Lindquist
(Tecumseh, Ont.). Lindquist threw a complete-game and
allowed two earned runs with four strikeouts. He is now 3-2 on
the year. The Cardinals opened the scoring with a solo homer by
senior Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.),
his fourth of the year, in the fourth inning. SVSU tacked on two
much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Patterson
doubled down the left field line which scored Chris Hanna
(Caledonia, Mich.) and Crawford. Patterson was
2-for-3 in game two with two doubles. Gannon notched two runs
in the seventh, but stranded two runners as Lindquist got Nick
Leslie to pop-out to third base to end the game.
SVSU continues a four-game set with Gannon
(15-13, 4-6 GLIAC) tomorrow at 12:00 pm.
