SVSU COMPLETES FOUR-GAME
SWEEP OF GANNON
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – A good Friday turned
into a better Saturday for the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State
as they completed a four-game sweep of Gannon by winning twice
at the SVSU Baseball Field. The Cards downed the Golden Kinghts,
9-1, in the first game as Scott Schlaff (Warren,
Mich./Mott) threw a complete-game four-hitter. Schlaff allowed
no earned runs and struck out three improving to 4-1 on the year.
Leadoff man Chris Hanna (Caledonia, Mich.)
and first baseman Adam Piggott (Sarnia, Ont.)
each drove in three runs for SVSU. Piggott went 3-for-4 with a
double and two runs scored. The Cards erupted for nine runs in
the fourth inning after GU starter Dale Dollard held them in check
for three innings. In total, SVSU scored nine runs on five hits
in the inning.
SVSU came from behind in game two for
a 6-4 victory. The Golden Knights led 4-1 in the fourth inning,
scoring all four runs in the fourth off starter Pat Woody
(Bay City, Mich./All Saints). Woody threw 5.1 innings
and allowed no earned runs with three strikeouts. Jim
Kelly (Lake Orion, Mich.) picked up the win
in relief (1-0) going 1.2 innings and allowing two hits. The Cardinals
pulled to within 4-3 with two runs in the fifth inning and took
the lead for good with a three-spot in the sixth inning. Ryo
Tahara (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) scored
three runs and went 2-for-2 with two walks. Senior Mike
Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) drove in two runs
in the sixth inning and collected his sixth two-bagger of the
season. Piggott drove in two runs and notched his 10th double
in the fourth inning.
Saginaw Valley State (18-16, 11-7
GLIAC) has won six straight and will continue GLIAC play with
a twinbill at Wayne State on Wednesday, April 14 at 2:00 pm.
