FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cardinals
Falter Against Chips
Mt. Pleasant, Mich. –
Saginaw Valley traveled to Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, (Apr. 20)
to take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan, losing 8-6 in a
nine inning contest. Saginaw Valley took a 5-2 lead into the seventh
inning, before surrendering six runs in the bottom of the seventh
and eighth innings to give the Chippewas the victory.
Saginaw
got things going right away, as they scored two runs in the first
inning. Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.)
and Jon Straus (Beal City, Mich.) were
the Cards who drove in runs in the first inning, as Crawford drove
in Jason Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford)
and Straus drove in Crawford. SVSU was quite in the second inning,
before scoring three more runs in the third inning. Adam
Piggott (Sarnia, Ont./Sarnia Collegiate) scored
on a Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic
Central HS) single, before Straus would do more damage, scoring
along with Norton courtesy of a Justin Hanning
(Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) single.
That would be about all the
scoring the Cards could do off of CMU’s pitchers, as they
would only score one more run, that coming in the eighth inning.
Taking the loss on the mound for SVSU was freshman Cory
McDonald (Hillman, Mich./Hillman HS) who allowed
two runs in one-third inning of relief. Leading the Cards offense
was Hanning with two hits and two RBI, along with Norton, Straus
and Burkhardt, who all collected two hits and an RBI.
With the loss SVSU drops
to 23-19 overall on the year. Saginaw Valley State returns to
action on Wednesday, (Apr. 21) as they travel to Midland, Mich.
To take on the Northwood Timberwolves. First pitch is scheduled
for 3:30pm.
