CARDS DROP A PAIR VERSUS
ASHLAND
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. –
The Cardinals ran into a tough Ashland squad on Sunday who belted
the ball in a pair of wins over SVSU. Saginaw Valley State dropped
an 8-4 game one decision after trailing 3-0 in the first inning.
The Cardinals battled to within 4-3 after three innings before
AU tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning. The Cardinals
left 10 men on base in game one. Justin Hanning
(Lake Orion, Mich.) led SVSU with a 3-for-3 game at the
plate with two doubles and a run scored. Joe Funsch
(Clio, Mich.) also doubled and tallied an RBI in three
at-bats with a walk. Starter Jesse Thompson (Muskegon,
Mich./Reeths-Puffer) gave up 10 hits and walked four in 5.2
innings falling to 2-6. Senior Pat Woody (Bay
City, Mich./All Saints) threw 1.1 innings and allowed one
hit with a strikeout.
The Eagles also won game two by the score
of 11-5. The Cardinals biggest inning was a three-run seventh.
Scott Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott) gave
up 12 hits and struck out five in six innings. Chris Hanna
(Caledonia, Mich.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Adam
Piggott (Sarnia, Ont.) belted a homer his fourth
of the year and collected two RBI's and three hits including his
14th double. The second game also featured three Ashland homers
off of Cardinal pitching.
Saginaw Valley State (25-23, 17-13 GLIAC)
will conclude GLIAC regular season play on Wednesday, April 28
as they host Wayne State in a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
