CARDS SPLIT WITH LEAGUE-LEADING
ASHLAND
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. –
The pitching of sophomore Steve Liebrecht (Saginaw,
Mich./Heritage) carried Saginaw Valley State to a 3-1 win in game
one on Saturday. Liebrecht threw a complete-game and allowed four
hits and no earned runs in earning his fifth victory. Liebrecht
also struck out four Eagles in the win. Sophomore Jason
Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) went 2-for-3 with
an RBI from the second spot. Senior catcher Kurt Neveau
(Bay City, Mich./Central) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the ninth
spot. Overall, SVSU collected eight hits with Jon Straus
(Beal City, Mich.) hitting his sixth double of the year. The Cards
broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the home half of the sixth inning.
Straus' double opened the inning and was followed by two outs.
Neveau then followed after a Joe Funsch (Clio,
Mich.) bunt was poorly fielded by pitcher Cody Castle and lined
a single for the game-winning RBI.
The Cardinal bats were silenced by starter
Josh Davidson and Jim Berry in game two. The two Eagles combined
on a two-hit shutout in an 8-0 AU win. Senior Adam Piggott
(Sarnia, Ont.) and junior Ryo Tahara (Battle
Creek, Mich./Lakeview) had the hits for SVSU. Richard
Lindquist (Tecumseh, Ont.) threw three innings and allowed
six earned runs in falling to 3-4 on the hill.
