Cardinals Win 6-0, But Slip 3-2
In The Nightcap
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. –
Saginaw Valley and Wayne State split a doubleheader on Wednesday
afternoon (Apr. 16) in a game played at Flat Rock Community College.
In the opening game, the Cardinals shutout the Warriors 6-0, but
a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning spoiled the
sweep for SVSU (3-2). The Cardinals are now 18-9 (8-4 GLIAC) for
the season, while WSU stands at 15-12 (6-4 GLIAC).
GLIAC Pitcher of the Week, Scott
Corby (London, Ontario) was masterful once again
on the hill for SVSU. Corby went the distance, picking up his
second straight complete-game shutout and the sixth of his career.
He matched a career-high with eleven strikeouts, while scattering
three hits with no walks. Now with back-to-back complete-game
shutouts, Corby has thrown 18 straight scoreless innings and improves
to a perfect 6-0 on the season.
The Cardinals jumped out quickly by scoring
a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the third,
SVSU went up 2-0, when Sean Odamura (Mississauga,
Ontario) doubled and scored on an RBI single by Eric
Caldwell (Cary Grove, Ill.). T.J. Lehnertz
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) padded
the Cardinal’s advantage with a two-run single up the middle,
in the top half of the fourth.
Caldwell put the Birds up 5-0 in the sixth
inning with an RBI single to center field. SVSU would tack on
another run in the seventh innings for the 6-0 shutout victory.
Odamura, Lehnertz, Caldwell, and Justin Hanning
(Lake Orion, Mich.) led the way offensively, as all four
players collected two hits in the contest.
Adam Piggott (Sarnia,
Ontario) singled in the fourth inning and came around to
score on an RBI single off the bat of Dan Jones
(Gladstone, Mich.). A walk in the fifth frame forced
in the first run of the day for Wayne State, knotting the score
at one apiece. SVSU regained the lead with Mike Crawford’s
(Lake Orion, Mich.) RBI double in the fifth inning.
The Cards held the lead until the bottom
of the seventh, when the Warriors rallied for a pair of runs with
two out in the inning. Joe Kramer (Linden,
Mich.) took the loss, suffering his second straight blown
save for SVSU.
The Cardinals will travel to Gannon on
Friday afternoon (Apr. 18) at 1:00p.m. to begin a four-game set
with the Golden Knights.
