SVSU Splits Doubleheader Against Wayne State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State Baseball team split a twinbill with Wayne State on a rainy Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 30), at the SVSU Baseball Field. The Cardinals stumbled 13-7 in the opener, but countered with a 6-3 victory in game two. The Cardinals are now 26-13 (16-8 GLIAC) for the season, while the Warriors are 19-22 (10-12 GLIAC).
In game one, Wayne broke the game open with 13 runs in the first four innings, keyed by a Tim Baywal two-run double to right field in the opening inning. The Warriors posted back-to-back four run innings in the third and fourth, mounting a 13-4 cushion.
SVSU put together a pair of three-run innings, narrowing the deficit. Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) doubled down the left field line, plating Sean Odamura (Mississauga, Ontario) and Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) in the third, while the fourth inning was highlighted with back-to-back RBI singles from Adam Piggott (Sarnia, Ontario) and Eric Caldwell (Cary Grove, Ill.). The bats silenced as both teams remained scoreless through the last two innings.
Steve Liebrecht (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) suffered the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season. Liebrecht issued five earned runs on six hits, lasting only three innings.
Piggott and Wessies each had two hits for the Cardinals, while Jones went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and two runs batted in.
In game two, the Cardinals went ahead 1-0, as Odamura singled and scored in the bottom of the first. WSU evened the score in the top of the third, but the Birds bounced back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Crawford hit his seventh home run of the season over the left-field fence, while Piggott extended the lead to 4-1, with a two-run smash of his own.
Wayne scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but SVSU matched the Warriors with insurance runs in the fifth and sixth, resulting in a 6-3 victory.
Left-handed pitcher, Mark Debo (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn HS) kept the Wayne State batters guessing, as he continued to work both sides of the plate with changes of speed. Debo pitched all seven innings, allowing only three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out five. Piggott led the Cardinal offense in game two, going 3-for-4 at the dish with a run scored and two RBI.
The Cardinals will host Calvin College in a 4:00 pm contest tomorrow (May 1), before traveling to Ashland for a weekend series with the Eagles. Weekend game times are set for 1:00p.m. on Saturday and 12:00p.m. on Sunday.
