Berkshire Signs Former Cardinal
Valenzuela
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. –
Former Saginaw Valley State standout Jason Valenzuela
(Ontario, Calif./Damien HS) has signed a contract with
the Berkshire Black Bears, an Independent baseball team out of
Berkshire, Massachusetts.
Valenzuela, a third team All-American
spent two seasons (2000-01) in a Cardinal uniform and earned a
bachelors degree in business administration from SVSU in 2002.
In his first year, Valenzuela set single-season records for hits
(86) and batting average (.448) at SVSU, while earning conference
and Regional Player of the Year honors. In 2001, Valenzuela set
the SVSU single-season record for stolen bases, swiping 32 of
33 attempts. He finished his career with 55 stolen bases and the
highest batting average in SVSU history (.410). Valenzuela helped
guide the Cardinals to the two best consecutive seasons in school
history, including back-to-back GLIAC Championships. The Cardinals
finished with a 40-11-1 record in 2000 and a 37-13 mark in 2001.
The Berkshire Black Bears begin their
season on June 2 against the Quebec Les Capitales.
