Cardinals
Fall to Titans 3-2
DETROIT, Mich. – A two-run rally in the bottom
of the eighth inning lifted the University of Detroit Titans to
a 3-2 win over Saginaw Valley State, Thursday (Mar. 27). A Cardinal
two-out rally attempt in the top of the ninth came up short as
pinch runner Justin Doughty (Oscoda, Mich.)
was thrown out at the plate.
The Titans scored a run in the bottom
of the first and held the lead until the Cardinals scored two
runs in the top of the fifth inning on an Eric Caldwell
(Cary Grove, Ill.) single. SVSU held the lead
going into the eighth inning before starter Steve Liebrecht
(Saginaw, Mich/Heritage HS) arm ran out of gas. Liebrecht
pitched eight strong innings only allowing seven hits and three
runs, on two walks and five strikeouts. In the bottom of the ninth
inning with two outs Adam Piggott (Sarnia,
Ont.) singled and advanced to second on a passed ball to
give Saginaw Valley one final chance to tie the game, doughty
was eventually thrown out at the plate after Jason Burghardt
(Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) singled to right.
T.J. Lehnertz (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic
Central HS) went 1-for-2 with a run scored for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals struggled to move base runners
all afternoon as they left twelve men stranded on base. Adam Meyers
picked up the win for the University of Detroit, and Liebrecht
picked up the loss for the Cardinals. SVSU falls to (10-4) on
the season, while the University of Detroit moves to (3-11). Saginaw
Valley returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 29 at Mercyhurst.
