Cardinals Blast St. Anselm In Season
Opener, 20-5
BRADENTON, Fla. – The
Saginaw Valley State University baseball team opened the 2003
campaign with a 20-5 win over St. Anselm University. The game
was called after five and one half innings due to inclement weather.
Trailing 2-0 after two innings of play,
the Cardinals exploded for 13 runs in the third inning to take
a 13-2 lead. Sean Odamura (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne
Park HS) paced the Cards’ attack with three hits. Adam
Piggott (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Collegiate) posted
two doubles and two RBI, while Dan Jones (Gladstone,
Mich.) recorded two hits and three RBI.
Ryan Reid (Sarnia,
Ontario) pitched 4.2 innings to earn the win. He allowed
four runs, six hits, five walks, and posted two strikeouts. Junior
Pat Woody (Bay City, Mich./All Saints HS)
pitched one and one third inning. The Cardinals and Hawks
return to the diamond on Sunday (March 2) for a 2:30p.m. contest
at Manatee Community College.
Notes: Saturday's game marked the the first time
in two years the Cardinals scored 20 runs...SVSU defeated Gannon
27-1 on May 5, 2001...the Cardinals opened the 2001 season with
20 runs in a 20-5 victory over Clarion University on February
25.
