SVSU Downs Mercyhurst, 6-5

ERIE, Pa. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team used a five-run sixth inning to down Mercyhurst College on Saturday (Mar. 29). The Lakers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth frame, but were unable to fend off the Cardinals’ bats. SVSU surged ahead 5-2 in the sixth inning and added a sixth run in the seventh to push the lead to 6-2. Mercyhurst pulled to within one run (6-5) in the bottom of the seventh inning before Joe Kramer (Linden, Mich.) closed out the game for SVSU.
   Senior Scott Corby (London, Ontario/AB Lucas HS) pitched six innings for SVSU and gave up just one hit. He walked six Lakers and fanned eight before giving way to Kramer in the seventh. Corby improved his record to 3-0 on the season, while Kramer earned his fourth save of the year. Steve Strohm suffered the loss on the mound for the Lakers.
   Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) led the Cardinal offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Sean Odamura (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park HS) also went 2-for-3. Freshman Jason Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) went 1-for-2 with one RBI. He also scored a run for the Cardinals.
   The win moves the Cardinals to 11-4 (1-0 GLIAC) on the season, while Mercyhurst falls to 6-11 (1-4). Game two of the double header was called in the bottom of the fourth inning due to darkness, with SVSU leading 10-3. The Cardinals and Lakers will return to the diamond on Sunday (Mar. 30) at 11:00a.m. to finish the game and also play the scheduled double header to complete the four-game set.
