Cardinals Roll Past IUP
BRADENTON, Fla. – Senior
Kyle Weessies (Climax, Mich./Scott HS)
cracked three singles lifting Saginaw Valley State University
to a 15-8 victory over IUP, Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 5) at Academy
Park in Bradenton, Fla. The Cardinals’ recorded ten hits
and drew a season-high eleven walks en route to their sixth straight
victory of the season. The Redbirds downed IUP for the third time
this week, improving their overall record to 6-0, while the Indians
evened their record at 3-3.
IUP opened the scoring with a run
in the top of the first inning, but two singles, four walks, and
a hit batter, helped the Cardinals take a 4-1 lead in the bottom-half
of the inning. Eric Caldwell’s (Cary
Grove, Ill.) double in the bottom of the second inning sparked
a three-run rally for the Cards, who went on to claim a 7-1 lead.
SVSU pushed across four more runs in both the fifth and eighth
innings to preserve the victory.
Senior Joe
Kramer (Linden, Mich.) pitched 6.2 strong innings
in relief to earn his first victory of the year. Kramer allowed
two runs on three hits, while fanning four.
Freshman Jason Burghardt
(Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) went 2-for-4 with a walk
and three RBI, while sophomore Justin Hanning (Lake
Orion, Mich.) added a hit and three RBI. Junior Kurt
Neveau (Bay City, Mich./All Saints HS) picked
up a single and two walks in the victory.
The Cardinals return to action Thursday
(Mar. 6) when they take on Assumption College at 10:00a.m.
