Indiana Downs SVSU, 4-3

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning sparked Indiana to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Saginaw Valley State, Tuesday (Mar. 25) at Sembower Field in Bloomington, Ind. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to10-3 on the season, while the Hoosiers move to 14-2.
The Cardinals put their bats right to work, tacking on a run in the top of the first inning. Sean Odamura (Mississauga, Ontario) drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a line drive single by Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.). Eric Caldwell’s (Cary Grove, Ill.) sacrifice fly brought Odamura home from third and gave SVSU the early 1-0 lead.
The Hoosiers countered with a run in the bottom of the first frame, but the Cardinals would regain the lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run opposite field blast from Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.). Crawford’s third home run in his last two games gave SVSU a 3-1 advantage.
On the mound, Scott Corby (London, Ontario) started for SVSU. Corby yielded one run on two hits, through five innings of work. Corby faced 19 batters, struck out two and walked one. Joe Kramer (Linden, Mich.) came on in relief to pitch the Birds out of a jam in the sixth inning. Kramer would go the distance for SVSU, finishing with 2.2 innings of relief. The Hoosiers, who left bases loaded in the sixth inning, finished the game with ten runners left on base.
As the Cardinal bats silenced, a run for the Hoosiers in the bottom of the eighth inning narrowed the margin to one run (3-2). Hoosier closer Ryan Smith came on in the top-half of the ninth inning to fend off the Cardinals.
In the bottom-half, Indiana’s Kevin Mahar laced a double to right field with one on and one out, to the even the score at three apiece. Corby Heckman was the hero for Indiana, as his walk-off single to deep center field scored the winning-run for Indiana. Heckman posted a 3-for-5 day, including the game winning RBI. Crawford and Justin Hanning (Lake Orion, Mich.) each finished 2-for-4. SVSU committed three errors in the game and finished with four runners left on base.
The Cardinals return to action Thursday (Mar. 27), when they travel to the University of Detroit for a 2:00p.m. game.
