Cardinals Earn Split With GVSU In Day Two

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley and Grand Valley split their second doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 13), evening the four-game series a two wins apiece. In the opening game, the Cardinals shutout the Lakers 6-0, but fell 2-1 in eight innings in game two. The Cardinals are now 17-8 (7-3 GLIAC) for the season, while GVSU stands at 22-8-1 (11-4-1 GLIAC).
Mark Debo (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn HS) took the hill for SVSU in game one, going the distance. Debo scattered four hits through seven innings, improving his season record to a perfect 4-0. Debo fanned two Laker hitters and walked five.
Behind the bat of Adam Piggott (Sarnia, Ontario) and Kyle Weessies (Climax, Mich./Scott HS) the Cardinals jumped in front after each singled and scored in the bottom of the second inning. In the fourth inning, Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) singled and eventually came around to score, giving the Cardinal’s a 3-0 lead.     In the fifth, Piggott tacked on another run after doubling and scoring on a RBI single by Weessies. The Cardinals pushed across two more in the bottom of the six frame, after Matt Buggia (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel HS) dropped an RBI single through the middle, scoring Sean Odamura (Mississauga, Ontario) from second. Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) would also score in the inning on a passed ball by GVSU.

Piggott and Weessies each finished the game with two hits for the Cardinals.
In game two, Jason Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) put the Birds on the scoreboard in the first inning after drawing a walk and scoring on an RBI double off the bat of Crawford.
Both teams were quiet for the next four innings before Grand Valley scored its first run of the day in the top of the sixth inning. An SVSU fielding error and an RBI double from the Lakers Scott Allen did the damage.
Eric Caldwell (Cary Grove, Ill.) gave way to closer Joe Kramer (Linden, Mich.). Caldwell surrendered only five hits, with no earned runs through seven innings of work. He struck out a six, with no walks.
In the extra inning, the Lakers Tony Pfennig ripped a single to right field and stole second, setting up the go-ahead-run. Elijah Beckwith laced an RBI double to deep center field for the lead.
The Cardinals failed to even the score in the bottom half of the eighth, falling in a tough 2-1 decision. Kramer suffered the loss, moving his record to 1-2 on the season. Odamura posted two hits, a walk and two stolen bases in the loss.
The Cardinals will travel to Wayne State on Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 16) for a 2:00p.m. twinbill with the Warriors.
