Saginaw Valley Splits Doubleheader with Grand Valley

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State spilt a doubleheader with Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 12), as part of the Cardinals home opener at the SVSU Baseball Field. The Cardinals fell 6-2 in the opener, but rebounded 1-0 in game two.
    In game one, the Cardinals (16-7, 6-2) jumped in front in the bottom of the second inning, when Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) singled and eventually came around to score on a T. J. Lehnertz (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) two-out single to left field. The Lakers (21-7-1, 10-3-1) would even the score in the top of the fourth and push across three more in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by Tony Pfennig. Grand Valley would eventually go up 6-1 and an SVSU rally in the bottom of the seventh fell short, for a 6-2 final.
    Ryan Reid (Sarnia, Ontario) suffered the loss, moving his record to 4-2 on the season. Lehnertz recorded two hits and posted an RBI, for the Cardinals.
    In game two, SVSU scored the only run of the game in the second inning as the Cardinals’ first two hitters Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) and Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) led off the inning with singles. Crawford later would score on a Grand Valley throwing error, giving SVSU a 1-0 lead.
    A 1-0 cushion would prove to be enough, as senior Scott Corby (London, Ontario) silenced the Lakers, throwing his fourth career complete-game shutout. Corby finished with seven strikeouts and three walks in his fifth win of the season. He surrendered two hits, one in both the third and fifth innings and finished by striking out the side in the seventh inning.
    The Cardinals and Lakers will conclude their weekend series with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader, Sunday (Apr. 12) at the SVSU Baseball Field.
