SVSU Slides Past Calvin College,
4-2
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.
– Saginaw Valley State posted a 4-2 rain-shortened victory
over Calvin College, Thursday (May 1) on a soggy SVSU Baseball
Field. The victory improved the Cardinals record to 27-13, 16-8
in the GLIAC, while Calvin fell to 6-22 (2-10 MIAA).
Right-handed pitcher, Pat Woody
(Bay City, Mich./All Saints HS) made his first start
of the season for SVSU, picking up his first career victory. Woody
went five innings, giving up eight hits, two runs, while striking
out three.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early
in the first inning, as Dan Jones (Gladstone,
Mich.) drove in Mike Crawford (Lake
Orion, Mich.) from third. Crawford, who moved himself into
scoring position by stealing second and third base, picked up
his team-leading 14th stolen base of the season.
Calvin tied the game in the top of the
third, 1-1, on a one-out RBI double to right field by Arie Eppinga,
scoring Terry O’Neal from second base.
SVSU captured the lead again in the bottom
half of the third innings, as Jones scored on a sacrifice fly
to center field by Adam Piggott (Sarnia,
Ontario).
T. J. Lehnertz (Grand
Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) doubled down the left
field line, plating Justin Hanning (Lake
Orion, Mich.) in the fourth inning. The next batter, Crawford
brought home Sean Odamura (Mississauga, Ontario)
from third base to give SVSU a 4-1 advantage.
Calvin tacked on another run in the fifth
inning, but the game was called due to the constant rain, resulting
in a five-inning 4-2 victory for SVSU.
The Cardinals will return to action this
weekend (May 3-4), when they travel to Ashland. Game times are
set for 1:00p.m. on Saturday and 12:00p.m. on Sunday.
