Cardinals Split With Eagles On
Sunday
ASHLAND, Ohio –
The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team earned a split
with Ashland University in a Sunday (May 4) doubleheader. The
Eagles posted a 7-3 win in the day's first game, before the Cardinals
rebounded with a 6-2 decision.
SVSU held a 3-2 lead in game one before Ashland
posted a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth frame. AU's
Jon Krugman held the Cardinals to just four hits and struck out
seven to earn the complete-game win. Eric Caldwell
(Cary Grove, Ill.) was tagged with the loss for SVSU.
The senior gave up six earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings
before giving way to Joe Kramer (Linden,
Mich.). Senior T.J. Lehnertz (Grand
Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) led the Cardinals at the
plate, as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI in defeat.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the
top of the second inning in game two. Ashland then responded with
two runs in the bottom of the frame to trim the lead (4-2). The
Cardinals added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning
to cap the scoring
(6-2).
Mark Debo (Bay City, Mich./John
Glenn HS) pitched a complete game for the Cardinals, improving
his record to 7-2 on the season. He gave up two runs on nine hits
and struck out four Eagles in the win. Chris Skibinski suffered
the loss for Ashland. He gave up four runs on four hits in 2.1
innings of work.
Junior Mike Crawford (Lake
Orion, Mich.) paced the SVSU offensive attack, as he went
2-for-4 with 5 RBI. The right fielder hit his eighth home run
of the season and also belted a triple in the win. Adam
Piggott (Sarnia, Ontario) and Kurt Neveau
(Bay City, Mich./Central HS) each went 2-for-4
on the day.
SVSU closes out the regular season at 28-16
(17-11 GLIAC), while Ashland finishes
35-16-1 (22-7-1 GLIAC). The Cardinals and Eagles will travel to
Allendale, Mich. this week for the GLIAC tournament.
Grand Valley State will host the tournament
as the No. 1 seed, by virtue of winning the GLIAC regular-season
crown. Ashland, the second seed, will face SVSU, the third seed,
in the opening round. Hillsdale College, the fourth seed, will
square off against GVSU in the first round.
