Cardinals Stumble At Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio – Saginaw Valley State dropped a doubleheader to Ashland University, Saturday (May 3) afternoon, at Donges Field in Ashland, Ohio.
   A go-ahead-run in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted AU to a 2-1 victory in game one, while a ten-run, eleven-hit third inning sparked a 12-3 triumph in the nightcap.
    SVSU falls to 27-15, 16-10 in the GLIAC play, while Ashland improves to 34-15-1 (16-10-1 GLIAC)
    In game one, the Cardinals jumped in front, 1-0, in the top of the fifth inning, when a passed ball scored Kyle Weessies (Climax, Mich.) from third base. SVSU left the bases loaded in the innings, failing to push across any further runs.
    Ashland knotted the score at 1-1, as the Eagles’ Brandon Cornell came through with an RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
    The game remained scoreless, until the bottom of the seventh, when Cornell drew a two-out walk and stole second base, setting up the winning run. Designated hitter Brock Wiskochil gave Ashland the 2-1 victory with a walk-off single.
   Scott Corby (London, Ontario) took his first loss of the season for SVSU, throwing the complete-game. Corby issued two runs on nine hits, while striking out six. Corby fell to 8-1 on the season. Ryan Hartzell (6-5) earned the win. He threw a complete game, allowing one run on four hits.
    Weessies finished with two hits and a run scored for SVSU.
    In game two, the Cardinals pounded eleven hits, for only three runs, while Ashland slugged twelve runs on 18 hits. Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) and Adam Piggott (Sarnia, Ontario) each had two hits and an RBI for SVSU, while T. J. Lehnertz (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) collected three hits and scored a run. Piggott hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning.
    
Eric McDaniel led Ashland, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Josh Gaub had three hits and two runs scored for the Eagles.
    Ryan Reid (Sarnia, Ontario) suffered the loss, moving his record to 7-3 on the season. AU’s Nathan Wright (9-2) picked up the complete-game victory allowing three runs on three hits.
    The Cardinals and Eagles will conclude their conference regular season with a
12:00 p.m. doubleheader, Sunday (May 4) at Donges Field in Ashland, Ohio.
