Cardinals Fall to Assumption, 11-5

BRADENTON, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team suffered its first defeat of the 2003 season on Thursday (Mar. 6), falling to Assumption College, 11-5. The Cardinals fell behind 7-0 in the fourth inning before scoring two runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Greyhounds then pushed their lead to 10-2 in the top of the fifth and went on for the win.
   Adam Campbell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas HS) surrendered eight runs in four and one-third innings of work on the mound. Offensively, the Cardinals had their chances, stranding 12 runners on base, including eight in the last three innings. Eric Caldwell (Cary Grove, Ill.), Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS), and Adam Piggott (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Collegiate HS) each posted two hits for SVSU. Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) also recorded two hits, including an RBI double in the fourth inning.
   The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-1 on the year. SVSU returns to action on Friday
(Mar. 7) when the Cardinals square off against Bloomsburg University at 2:30p.m.
