Four Cardinals Named To All-Conference Team

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Four Saginaw Valley State Cardinals have been named to the GLIAC baseball all-conference team, including senior Scott Corby (London, Ontario), who captured the GLIAC Pitcher of the Year award. Corby earned first-team honors, while senior T.J. Lehnertz (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) and juniors Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) and Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) were named to the second team.
    Corby was named GLIAC Pitcher of the Year after a 9-1 season for the Cardinals. The right-hander, who reclaimed the award after winning in 2001, led the league in wins (9), earned run average (2.11), shutouts (4), and opponent batting average (.175). This season, Corby was a two-time recipient of the GLIAC Pitcher of the Week award (Apr. 14, 21) and at one point in the year pitched 25 consecutive scoreless innings. He finished fifth in the GLIAC for innings-pitched (72.2) and strikeouts (68). He now stands as SVSU’s all-time wins and strikeout leader, recording 270 career strikeouts and 35 career victories. He finished his SVSU career with a final record of 35-10 with a 3.92 earned run average. Corby finished atop SVSU’s all-time career record for appearances (52) and innings-pitched (275.1). He finished third in complete-games (18) and seventh in ERA (3.92) on the Cardinals career charts.
    Lehnertz, the Cardinals’ second basemen, led SVSU to a league-best .966 fielding percentage. He recorded a fielding percentage of .994 with 67 putouts and 109 assists. Lehnertz went deep three time this season and batted .289. He collected 35 hits, 24 walks, and scored 30 runs for the Cardinals. He moved into ninth place on SVSU’s all-time walks list with 101 career base on balls.
    Crawford led the Cardinal offense, posting team-highs in runs batted in (43), stolen bases (15), and total bases (83). He tied for first on the team and second in the conference with eight home runs, finishing with a slugging percentage of .589. Crawford batted .298 with 42 hits and 36 runs scored. The right fielder cracked nine doubles and a team-high four triples.
    The designated hitter, Jones put up big numbers for SVSU in 2003. The left-handed slugger pounded a team-high slugging percentage of .638. Jones led the GLIAC conference with 40 walks and tied a team-high with eight home runs. He batted .324 with 34 hits and 32 runs scored. Jones hit nine doubles and drove in 42 runs for SVSU. Jones earned GLIAC Player of the Week back on April 28. That week he went 9-for-13 (.692) at the plate, with four home runs and nine RBI. He belted three homers in SVSU’s doubleheader sweep over Findlay
(Apr. 27).
    Also receiving GLIAC baseball All-Conference honorable mention honors were senior Mark Debo (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn HS) and junior Ryan Reed (Sarnia, Ontario). The Cardinals earned a GLIAC Co-Championship and finished the season with a final record of 30-17, 17-11 in the GLIAC.
