Baseball Takes Two From Grand Valley
ALLENDALE, Mich. - Just one day after dropping
both games of a double-header, the Saginaw Valley State University
baseball team rebounded to win two games over GLIAC rival
Grand Valley State University on Sunday (April 7). The Cardinals
defeated the Lakers 6-5 in the first contest, and 18-5 in
the second game.
In the first game of the day, SVSU carried
a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the
Lakers scored twice to tie the contest. In the top of the
seventh inning SVSU pushed one run across and turned then
turned to Joe Kramer (Linden), who pitched a
scoreless seventh inning to earn the win. The Cardinals managed
six runs off just four hits.
In the second half of the twinbill, SVSU
opened with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and
never looked back. The Cardinals led 5-2 after three innings
of play. In the fourth inning SVSU scored seven runs to move
the lead to 12-2. GVSU's starting pitcher David Olson lasted
just three and one-third innings. SVSU's Rob Conley (Elliot
Lake, Ontario, CA) allowed just two earned runs over five
innings of work. Jay Scott (Berlington, Ontario,
CA/Aldershot) led the Cardinals' assault, going 4-for-5
at the plate with six RBIs.
SVSU now stands at 14-5 (6-3 GLIAC) and
trails GVSU (14-6, 6-2 GLIAC) by just a half-game in the conference
standings. The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday (April
10) when they host Adrian College at 3:00 p.m.
