Cardinals Sweep Warriors
DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw
Valley State University baseball team defeated Wayne State University
6-3, and 8-3 on Saturday (April 20). The Cardinals used big innings
late in both games to come away with the sweep.
In the opening contest, Wayne State (12-17,
8-6) staked a 2-0 lead after two innings, and held a 3-1 advantage
heading into the sixth inning before SVSU's offense kicked in.
The Cardinals scored five runs in the sixth frame to take a 6-3
lead and claim victory.
Senior Adam Ruffner (Gibraltar/Carlson
HS) came on in relief of Mark Debo (Bay City/John
Glenn HS) to pick up the win and improve his record to 4-0
on the season. Junior T.J. Lehnertz (Grand Rapids/Catholic
Central HS) led the Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-3
with two RBI.
In the second game, the Cardinals (23-7, 12-5)
held a slim 4-3 lead after six innings, but scored four times
in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Eric Caldwell
(Cary Grove, Ill.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while
Sean Odamura (Mississauga, Ontario, CA/Lorne Park) went
2-for-4 and scored twice.
Senior Toby Larkin (Bridgeport) entered
the game in the fourth inning and pitched one and two-thirds innings
to earn the win in relief of Rob Conley (Elliot Lake,
Ontario, CA). Larkin's record moved to 5-0 on the season.
The Cardinals and Warriors finish the weekend
series on Sunday (April 21) with a twinbill set to start at noon.
