Cards Manage to Split With Oilers
University Center, Mich.-Despite
scoring just one run all afternoon, the SVSU Cardinals were able
to pull-off a split with Findlay on Saturday. Game one saw the
Cards get shut-out 4-0 behind a five-hit performance by Oiler
hurler Kirk Graven. The Cards were able to return the favor in
game two shutting-down the Oiler bats and scoring in the bottom
half of the seventh to claim victory, 1-0.
The Oilers started things off in
game one with an unearned run in the second inning and never looked
back, tallying another run in the third and two more in the sixth.
Starting Findlay pitcher Graven went the distance, striking-out
three Cardinal batters.
In the nightcap, Cardinal starter
Heath Craven (Hartland) went 5.1 strong innings,
scattering seven hits and striking-out four Oilers. Adam Ruffner
(Gibraltar/Carlson HS) came-in to earn the win in relief
and up his mark to 2-0 on the season. The game was scoreless until
the bottom of the seventh when the Cards played "little ball"
to push a run across. T.J. Lehnertz (Grand Rapids/Catholic
Central) led off the inning by beating-out an infield single
and Jay Scott (Burlington, Ont.) and Sean Odamura
(Mississauga, Ont.) followed with back-to-back bunt singles
down the third baseline to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Kurt
Neveau (Bay City/Central) drove-in the game-winner
with a walk to force in a run.
The split puts the Cardinals' record
at 17-6, (7-4 GLIAC). The teams will square-off again tomorrow
with a double-header beginning at noon.
