Cards Take Three of Four From Nationally-Ranked Rivals
University Center, Mich- Saginaw Valley
State University proved yet again that they are the elite in the
GLIAC, beating #10 Ashland three times out of four this weekend.
The wins put the Cards in the top half of the GLIAC standings
with a 4-1 mark (12-3 overall)
Game one, played on Friday, saw
the Cards come back from a 6-0 deficit to win 11-8. Due to rain
on Friday, the teams were forced to play three games on Saturday.
The Eagles jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the fourth inning
in the opener and never looked back, winning 9-3. But the Cardinals
stormed back in Saturday's second game behind the bat of Justin
Garcia (Bay City/Western). Garcia, the hero on Friday
with his tie-breaking three-run homer, exploded for five RBI to
help SVSU hang-on to an early seven-run lead to win 11-10. In
the nightcap, Adam Piggott (Sarnia, Ont.) belted
two mammoth homeruns, going 3-for-3 with six RBI. Piggott
and Garcia each had outstanding weekends, collecting two homeruns
and nine RBI apiece.
The Cardinals raise their overall
record to 12-3 as they head into Tuesday's contest with Division
I Central Michigan University. Gametime is slated for 2pm.
