Cardinals Sail Past Lakers 7-3
NORTH EAST, Pa. - The Saginaw Valley State baseball
team picked up its first conference win of the season with a 7-3
win over Mercyhurst College on Sunday (March 24). Jay Scott
(Berlington, Ontario, CA/Aldershot) led the Cardinals attack,
going 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs. Senior Mike Condon
(Utica) went 2-for-3 with one RBI, and scored a run.
SVSU (9-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in
the top of the second inning before the Lakers cut the lead to
4-2 after three innings of play. After a scoreless fourth inning,
the Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning
to pushed their lead to 7-2. Mercyhurst added a run in the bottom
of the sixth inning to round out the scoring.
Junior pitcher Scott Corby (London,
Ontario, CA/AB Lucas) picked up the win, allowing just five
hits and three runs over six innings. Toby Larkin (Bridgeport)
came on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning. Steve Strohm suffered
the loss for
Mercyhurst (7-10, 0-1).
The Cardinals travel to face Alma College on
Tuesday (March 26) before hosting Ashland University on Friday
(March 29) at 1:00 p.m.
