FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cardinals Hammer Timberwolves, Up Record to 34-9
Midland, Mich.- The Saginaw
Valley State University Cardinal baseball team made a statement
in a doubleheader sweep of host Northwood University 11-0 and
10-2, respectively on Wednesday. SVSU, currently tied for fourth
in the North Central region standings, is making a postseason
push, now winning 14 of its last 16 games.
The Cards got on the board early
and often, batting around in the first inning of both games, scoring
three and four runs, respectively. Three homeruns in game one
gave Cardinal starter Heath Craven (Hartland) all
he would need in earning his eighth victory of the season (8-0).
Sean Odamura (Mississauga, Ont.) hit a two-run blast
in the second inning to give the Cards a 5-0 lead. Chris Ebright
(Ithaca) hit a three-run homer in the fifth and Eric
Caldwell (Cary, Ill./Mott CC) hit a two-run job to
stake the lead at 10 in the sixth inning. The Cards would tack-on
one more run in the seventh as relief pitcher Toby Larkin
(Bridgeport) walked and eventually came around to score.
In the nightcap, Scott Corby
(London, Ont.) moved his record to 7-5 after another
outstanding performance on the mound. Corby allowed just two hits
and one run in five innings of work. Adam Piggott (Sarnia,
Ont.) went 3-for-3 in game two with two runs scored and two
RBIs. Odamura had two hits and drove-in two and Justin Garcia
(Bay City/Western) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Cardinals are 34-9 overall this
season, with a 21-7 mark in the GLIAC. SVSU will travel to Ypsilanti
on Friday night for a 6 p.m. nine-inning contest with Eastern
Michigan University before heading back to University Center on
Saturday for the regular season finale in a doubleheader with
Rochester College.
