Cards Split With Knights

University Center, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team wrapped-up the home portion of its conference schedule splitting a doubleheader with visiting Gannon University on Sunday. Each team recorded a shutout as Knight starter Sean Gority got the win in game one 5-0 and a combined-effort one-hitter by the Cardinals in the nightcap gave them the nightcap, 1-0.
In game one, Gority silenced the Cards' bats, allowing just five hits in earning the complete game shutout and moving his record to 5-5. Gannon CF Andy Chalot had three hits including a key single in a four-run fourth to give Gannon all the runs it would need. Justin Young (Flint/Kearsley) gave-up three earned runs over 4.1 innings to take the loss for SVSU.
In the nightcap, the pitching prevailed again, with the Cardinals teaming-up to one-hit the Knights. SVSU starter Rob Conley (Elliott Lake, Ont.) gave up only one hit over 4.1 innings, while Toby Larkin (Bridgeport) and Adam Ruffner (Gibraltar/Carlson) blanked Gannon over the remaining 2.2 innings. The Cards had failed to have a runner past second base until the sixth inning of the second game when Sean Odamura's (Mississauga, Ont.) shot up the middle was too much for Knight pitcher Dale Dollard to handle, loading the bases. Eric Caldwell (Cary, Ill./Mott CC) then knocked-in T. J. Lehnertz (Grand Rapids/Catholic Central) for the game-winning run with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly. Ruffner (5-0) earned the win in relief, lowering his ERA to 1.00 for the season.
The Cardinals will make-up a game originally scheduled for April 2 at Central Michigan on Monday at 2 p.m. before heading to crosstown-rival Northwood on Wednesday night to wrap-up their GLIAC schedule. SVSU (31-9, 19-7 GLIAC) is currently ranked fourth in the North Central region and #27 in the nation (Collegiate Baseball News).
