Cards Make Birthday a Happy One
University Center, Mich. -
Saginaw Valley State University baseball head coach Walt Head
celebrated his birthday in style on Saturday as his Cardinals
swept an important GLIAC doubleheader from Gannon University,
11-7 and 9-4. Head's team is now 30-8 on the season overall, but
more importantly moves to 17-6 in GLIAC-play to stay near the
top of the GLIAC standings.
Every Cardinal in the starting lineup
had a hit in game one including homeruns off the bats of Justin
Garcia (Bay City/Western), Kurt Neveau (Bay
City/Western) and T.J. Lehnertz (Grand Rapids/Catholic
Central). SVSU starting pitcher Heath Craven (Hartland)
pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs en route to his
seventh win (7-0) of the season. The Cardinals are now 9-0 when
Craven starts.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals rallied
from a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a
five spot in that frame. They would add two more in the sixth
to push the lead to the final score of 9-4. Lehnertz went 3-for-4
in game two with four runs batted in. Ryan Wilkinson (Dearborn)
hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to help starter Scott
Corby (London, Ont.) secure the victory. Corby has
now recorded back-to-back complete game victories after last weekend's
one-hit gem against Hillsdale.
Saginaw Valley reached thirty wins
in a season for the eighth time in school history, all under the
guidance of coach Head. He has 570 wins to his credit at SVSU,
winning nearly 59 percent (.588) of his games. The Cardinals are
currently ranked fourth in the North Central region as they make
their push towards a possible third-straight NCAA postseason berth.
They will close-out the home portion of their conference schedule
with a twinbill against Gannon on Sunday beginning at noon.
