Cardinals Salvage Split With Northwood
University Center, Mich.-
SVSU baseball managed to revenge a loss in game one to rout Northwood
in the nightcap and split a doubleheader on Wednesday. Game one's
final had the Timberwolves winning 9-5 behind a four-run first
inning. In game two, the Cards rumbled back to score 17 runs while
blasting five homeruns to win 17-5.
Coming into today's action, Northwood
was 6-24 on the season, having dropped five in a row and 20 of
their last 22 contests. The Timberwolves got things going quickly
in game one with Brett Kidd's three-run homer capping-off a four-run
inning in the first stanza. The Wolves would tally two more runs
in the second and fourth innings and add another in the sixth
for a 9-5 finish. Cardinal catcher Kurt Neveau (Bay
City/Western) hit two opposite-field homeruns in the first
game to bring his season total to four.
In the second game, the Cardinals
scored in each of the first five innings, including eight in the
fifth inning alone. That fifth inning featured three Cardinal
homers: a two-run poke by Adam Piggott (Sarnia, Ont.)
, and back-to-back shots by Ryan Wilkinson (Dearborn)
and Chris Ebright (Ithaca). 23 different Cardinals
saw action in the field in game two as both teams cleared their
benches following the big inning.
The Cardinals are now 10-5 in conference
play (20-7 overall) as the prepare for tomorrow's showdown against
Division-I opponent Detroit-Mercy. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
