Guest/Non-Degree Seeking Students

Saginaw Valley State University welcomes all guests and exploring students. Please read the definitions below to see which category best suits your needs, along with information on how to enroll in classes. 

Guest Students

Welcome! As someone wanting to guest at SVSU, you are a valued member of our Cardinal community. We are here to help you accomplish your goals and make progress toward your degree or certification program, no matter what school you are currently attending.

Check out our schedule of classes to make sure we offer what you need.

To attend SVSU as a guest student you must be in good academic standing at your home institution with a cumulative GPA of a 2.0 or higher and be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university.

  1. Complete the SVSU online application for admission. 
  2. Submit a transcript (official or unofficial) from your home institution. You can email it to admissions@svsu.edu.

Please allow a minimum of five business days for SVSU to process your Guest Application.


Guest student status is valid for one semester only. If you wish to attend more than one semester, a new guest application must be filled out each semester.


Guest students are not held by pre-requisite courses. You are responsible for placing yourself into an appropriate level of coursework.


Once you are admitted through SVSU, you will receive an email with login instructions to activate an SVSU online student profile at my.svsu.edu.

Guest students are eligible to register once scheduling is “Open to ALL students” during Priority Registration and any available registration day after that. Click here for registration dates and times.

Guest Students needing assistance registering for a course that has a prerequisite should contact SVSU's Office of the Registrar.

Students should work with an academic advisor at their home institution to determine how guest credits earned at SVSU will be accepted.

Guest students are not eligible to receive financial aid from SVSU.

Canvas is a course management system that supports online learning and teaching. It allows professors to post grades, information, and assignments online.

To access Canvas, log into my.svsu.edu with your SVSU username and password. Click on the “Canvas” button located at the top of the “Quick Links” column.  Direct Link: https://canvas.svsu.edu or download the app for Apple or Android.

Use the Find Course Materials webpage to find your textbook list. You will need to have your class list on hand to input the proper course and section numbers.


Non-Degree Seeking

You are a non-degree post-baccalaureate student if you hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree and desire to enroll in one or more courses at SVSU without entering a degree program. 

This option is often used by those wishing to pursue prerequisites for graduate school programs or for personal interest and already hold a bachelor's degree or higher.

The non-degree post-baccalaureate application can be reached from the svsu.edu/apply page by selecting "Undergraduate" and by selecting "I want to be a student at SVSU."

What is the admission criteria?

  1. Provide evidence of your existing bachelor's degree by supplying a copy of your transcript (official or unofficial) or a copy of your diploma.  If you hold an SVSU bachelor's degree, we will already have a copy of your record on file.
  2. Official transcripts of previous college work will not be required until a student completes 31 undergraduate credits at SVSU or you wish to apply for degree-seeking status. However, without transcripts, you may have to seek departmental permission to enroll in courses that have prerequisites.  Therefore, it is recommended that you send an official transcript at the time of application.
  3. Applicants who hold bachelor's degrees and wish to complete coursework for teacher certification should contact the College of Education at 989.964.4057 or email coeconnect@svsu.edu.

Reminder: If you choose not to send official transcripts from all prior institutions attended, then you may need to seek departmental permission to enroll in courses that have prerequisites and you may need to register in person. Plan ahead accordingly.

Note that the transcript of a non-degree post-baccalaureate student from SVSU will include no postings for majors, minors, certificates, etc as a credential will not be awarded except to a degree-seeking student.  Exceptions may exist for students who have already been granted a bachelor's degree through SVSU.

Auditors

You are an auditor if you wish to take courses at SVSU but desire neither credits nor grades for these courses. The tuition charge for an auditor is the same as that charged to the student who is taking the course for credit. Auditors are not eligible for financial aid. As an auditor, you are not required to submit high school or higher education transcripts.  However, you must reapply each semester you wish to audit a course. 

To audit a course, you must submit the following:

  1. Completed undergraduate application for admission
  2. There is no application fee, so applying is free.

Auditors must register in person at the Office of the Registrar and are eligible to register for courses during those registration periods that are open to all students. No student may register after the late registration period. Please visit the Registration Schedule page for dates and times. 


Exploring the University

You are an "Exploring the University" student if you would like to take classes for personal enhancement or thinking about pursuing a college degree in the future. Exploring the University students are eligible to take up to 15 credits with a maximum of two courses per semester. At any time students may enter a degree program at SVSU by following the admissions criteria outlined for degree-seeking students. Credits earned through the program will transfer into a degree program. Students are not eligible for financial aid until they are enrolled in a degree-seeking program. To be considered for admission, you must submit the following:

  1. Completed Exploring the University application.
  2. Students must have a high school diploma or GED with no prior college coursework completed. 

Admitted Exploring the University students must register in person at the Office of the Registrar. Students are eligible to register during those registration periods that are open to all students. Please visit the Registration Schedule page for dates and times.
