As part of Saginaw Valley State University's 50th anniversary celebration, the theatre and music departments will produce an authentic recreation of one of Broadway's biggest hit musicals, "Mel Brooks' The Producers." Some 80 students will be involved in SVSU's production of the hit – the largest in school history – complete with the original Broadway set and costumes.
"In my 10 years on the faculty at SVSU, I have never seen students and faculty work harder on a production."
"I knew going to a smaller school would allow a lot more personal instruction and hands-on experience. But this is so much more. Instead of playing the leads as I did in high school, I’m convincing audiences that I’m an entirely different person after a five-second transformation on the sidelines."
"Usually, music students sing in a darkened concert hall that’s kind of stuffy. This has been a revelation for them. They’re having to tap dance. They’re having to sing, and sing for an audience that is really going to be respond, and be funny, and act. This has been a great experience for our music students to really learn what the theatrical world is like."
